Quiet River by William Gotha. A New England river flows around several curves, from shade to sun. Rocks are visible beneath the surface, where sun doesn’t dapple the ripples.

Quiet River

— painting by William Gotha

In memoriam, David Sinish

Any time of day, he thought,

was good

on the water, an oar,

a paddle, dipping in,

out, each stroke sure,

practiced, driving canoe,

kayak, forward,

every stretch of the river

(his river, the Farmington)

familiar from frequent,

sometimes daily

attention to the details

of still water and rapid,

sandbar and old dam.

But best of all were those summer

evenings when light

lingered, air

cleared, the day

softened

and he could pause,

breathe

the cool quiet rising

from water rippling over stones

and be

in his element.
