Flower shadows, dye colored, on silver gelatin photographic paper, and the reflection of the poet on the glass

 Shadow, Reflection

—”My Lily of Lilies” - Caroline Loftus

No longer blossom or leaf,

phloem dried, dyed

shades

of yellow-green,

aortic red,

these lilies left their mark,

as did I, on the glass

protecting the absence

of flowers.

Shadow, reflection:

We were, once, here.

Usually the painter’s work and my poem need no explanation, but in this case, I wanted to provide an image of the original piece that I found so striking. I was attracted to “My Lily of Lilies” from my first viewing, but it wasn’t until I saw my reflection in the image I took of the framed piece that I found my way into a poem. One of the things I admired about the original art was its depth, the way the uncolored images hovered behind the colored ones like ghosts. My reflection added another dimension to that depth.
